Offline POS: keep selling when the internet drops

Every shop has had the moment: a queue at the counter and the router’s lights go out. With a lot of point-of-sale systems that’s the end of selling until the connection comes back. Universal Till was built the other way round. The till keeps everything it needs on the device itself, so an internet outage is something you notice on the status bar, not at the front of the queue.

Here’s what that means in practice, behind the counter.

What keeps working with no internet

Ringing up items, choosing sizes and extras, applying discounts and holding a basket for later all run against the till’s own local data. None of it needs the network. A held basket that you pick up again later finishes exactly the same way, online or not.

Taking payment. Cash works as normal. So does any payment method that doesn’t itself need the internet. A card reader that has to call its payment processor is a property of that reader, not of the till: the till never blocks a sale because the internet is down.

Printing receipts. The receipt printer is connected straight to the till, by USB or over your shop’s own network, so printing doesn’t depend on the internet either. If the printer itself can’t be reached, the till tells you that separately.

Knowing what’s going on. The status bar has an Online light. It turns to Offline the moment the device loses its network (Wi-Fi off, cable out) and back to Online when it returns. When the network is fine but the internet behind it isn’t, it says No internet, and sales go through as usual. If the screen itself loses touch with the till, a banner reads “Connection problem — the till keeps working offline.” It clears by itself the next time things work, so there’s nothing to dismiss.

When the cloud side has a problem

Universal Till has optional cloud features for owners who want them, like managing products from a browser. The till is designed so that none of them can stop a sale:

  • If the cloud refuses the till’s sign-in three times in a row, a small chip explains why and what to do. The till keeps selling offline, tries again once an hour, and keeps everything it still has to send until it’s connected again.
  • If a paid plan can’t be confirmed, or ends, the paid features pause and Settings explains which ones. Selling is never affected.
  • Problem reports you capture with the bug-report button are saved on the till and sent once you’re back online.
  • The notes on what changed in each update are built into the till, so they open without an internet connection too.

More than one till, no internet

If you run a second till, the tills talk to each other over your shop’s own network. If an additional till can’t reach the main till, it keeps selling anyway. Its sales wait on that till and sync as soon as the main till is back, and a light on the status bar says in words what’s happening: Main till linked, or Main till not reachable since … — selling offline.

If your Wi-Fi stops the tills from seeing each other (some networks do), an additional till can also ask your shop’s cloud account where the main till last said it was, before it falls back to selling offline. That needs both tills to be connected to the cloud. Without it, only your shop network is searched.

Your data stays with you

Because the till works from its own data, your sales, products and settings live on the till in your shop. Settings → Backups makes a full snapshot any time, and Download saves a copy you can keep somewhere safe, off the till.

Offline-first isn’t a mode you have to remember to switch on. It’s simply how Universal Till works, and the core is free with no monthly fee. Download Universal Till and try it with the router unplugged, or see how to get started.
